It Was Cashews, Damn it!

A few nights ago, Dan and I went out for dinner to our favourite restaurant.  As we sat there enjoying our first course, Dan commented on how much he was lovin' his beet salad.  Yes, the guy had actually ordered a beet salad.

(You see, he rarely gets to enjoy his precious beets because I can't stand the things and refuse to cook them.)

It reminded me of a recent Dr. Oz show.

"Speaking of beets, you should have seen this guy that Dr. Oz had on yesterday."

"Oh, yeah?  He was going on about beets?"

"Well, he holds the Guinness Record for having the world's best memory.  The guy can remember 68 decks of cards."

(eyebrows rise in disbelief)

"68 decks?"

"Well . . . maybe it was 64.  Sixty-something.  I think. . . Anyway, Dr. Oz had him do a demonstration.  He flipped over a deck of cards, one by one, then asked the guy to name each card from memory, in order.  And he did it perfectly."

"Hmph! I wonder if they let him into the casinos in Vegas..."

(We both grin at the thought)

"Anyway...  This guy says he regularly eats three foods that are super memory enhancers."

"Memory enhancers?  And one was beets?"

"Mm-hmm. Beets. And Avocados. Both are known to improve memory."

"And the third? You said there were three foods."

"Yeah, three . . . And the third food was . . . (a frown of concentration wrinkling my brow)  Um . . . Uh. . . (the frown deepens)  Hmm. . . I can't remember the third. . . . . "

"I think," Dan says, (completely straight-faced) "you should learn to like beets."

  1. The strength of my memory will have to rest on avocados alone.

  2. This was my first laugh of the day! Silly me, I thought to myself, "I wonder what the third thing was?"...and then I looked again at the title of your post. :)

  3. I don't like beets. At least pickled beets. Those are the only kind my mom ever served. I am a little iffy on cashews. But, I love avocados. My husband loves cashews and he forgets everything so I'm not so sure about that. However he has killed off A LOT of brain cells in the past. So, maybe without them he'd be a lot worse.

  4. Love beets!! we used to sneak into grandma's cold cellar and open the pickle jars and eat our a little out of several jars. I don't think poor grandma ever brought a full jar up from the cellar! LOL

and I love almonds too - but I don't eat enough avocados. Guess I could have been a genuis but for that!

  5. I'll eat triple cashews and skip the others. I'll be fat but my memory might improve.

  6. Love beets and cashews, but pretty much consider the only good thing about avocados is how easy it is to grow a pretty plant from their seeds.

  8. Not mad about beets but blend them with thick natural yogurt walnuts and garlic, great with fresh crusty bread.

  9. i've eaten beets in powder form only & that's way easier than eating the real thing in natural form. plus, you get all the nutritional value in no time flat. avocados and cashews are lovely. i eat an avocado almost every day, so my memory should be improving pretty soon.

  10. It is a vicious circle...I should remember these foods in order to get a better memory, but since my memory is already so bad how can I start eating them since I actually forgot the other one....I remember beets, do pickled beets count :/

  11. Hahaha. I totally hate beets and can't stand the smell of them even, but maybe I should try to change my opinion as my memory is in need of help. I can definitely do the cashews, and I love avocado dip, so maybe that alone will help me out. I cringed as soon as I read that your husband ordered beet salad as just the word beet nearly makes me gag. :D

  15. Cashews? Why, that's just nuts. As far as beets, I have to admit
WE INTERRUPT THIS COMMENT TO APOLOGIZE FOR THE COMPLETELY PREDICTABLE 'CASHEW, THAT'S JUST NUTS' COMMENT. MR. PENWASSER HAS BEEN UNDER A LOT STRAIN LATELY AND CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY EASY REFERENCE TO THE AFOREMENTIONED PREDICTABLE JOKE. WE NOW RETURN YOU TO WHAT WE HOPE IS A MORE CLEVER RETORT. THANK YOU.
that I'm not really a big fan, considering they are pretty much just purple tubers (which sounds kinda dirty, doesn't it?). Anyway, I prefer pickled beets. As long as I get to hold my OWN tuber (which damn well better not be purple).
