Here's Hoping My Luck Holds Out

I live in a very windy village.  I'm not sure why it's always windy here, but I'm guessing it's because I live some fifty kilometres of flat farm land from two Great Lakes.  Whatever the reason, it's always windy,  which is a nuisance if I'm outside gardening and have to always tie my hair back, but a good thing when I'm on my sail boat on Lake Huron.

Anyway. . . yesterday was windier than most.  So when I pulled up into my driveway after work that evening, then walked around to the passenger door to retrieve a six pack of beer and a bottle of wine, the wind was whipping my hair and winter's road sand into my face.

I had no sooner entered the house and shut the front door behind me when I heard a large BANG.  Opening the door, I saw this:

A few steps down my walkway and I saw this:

On closer inspection I saw this:

Can you see it?  Our basketball net was blown over and missed my Ford Escape by mere millimetres!  Millimetres!

This has definitely been my lucky week!  First a diamond ring turns up in our shop vac, and now our vehicle (not to mention my very person) was spared being squashed, smashed or scratched mere MERE MILLIMETRES!

And they say things happen in threes.  I'm thinking I should buy a lottery ticket. . .

So, do you have any stories of near misses to share?

  1. The first thing I thought was, "Thank goodness it happened after you were inside!" That would have been horrible! Glad it missed your car too! Maybe a lottery ticket is in order!

    1. I've already bought the ticket, so cross your fingers! Can you imagine the blog post if I won?

This sure was a case of good luck.
So glad that it happened like that when it had to happen.

    1. You know, that basketball base is filled with sand and water. It took a great wind to blow it over.

  4. Pretty windy there, huh? Man that blows!
I have a basketball net, too. It's filled with water. I also put a couple of cinder blocks on it. And that fat kid from down the street. I think I may have to eventually feed him, though. I need him to stay fat.
That WAS quite a close escape, though. Millimeters? Sounds much more serious than inches.
(BTW: teaser. 'M' for the A-Z Challenge will be on the "Metric" System" Stay tuned).
Okay, gotta go get the fat kid a bacon lard foldover.

    1. God! You make me laugh! That base was filled with sand, water (and don't tell the environmental people) anti-freeze. It's withstood years of wind before toppling.

      - your teaser worked - I'll be watching for the "metric" post. :)

  5. That is some wind. It was pretty windy here earlier this week too. Thank God we don't have a basketball hoop.
Many years ago, my sister and I were driving and the roads were icy. Everyone was going in the ditches. We were no exception. But, we didn't go just a little ways. We went way down the hill before we got stopped. It was bad, but than not too long later a SUV went off the road the same place we had. If we had stopped sooner that SUV would have plowed into us.
    Everything happens for a reason.

    1. I've had the wind blow my car off of icy roads before, so I know how that can happen. You were lucky.

  7. Hope that you had as good luck on the Lotto Max! That was certainly a windy day and your Ford lived up to its name and escaped getting crunched, as well as you! So glad!!

  8. Oh my, our car is often parked directly under the basketball hoop. I'm showing this to the husband to show him what CAN happen. We are prone to cyclones around here.
