I'm a Cool Mom... Right?

I was recently at a West 49 store, trying to blend in to the super cool skateboard, snowboard & surf shop while my son shopped for jeans.

West 49 is one of those stores that blast their hip music from an amazing sound system.  Loud.  And I'm enjoying it as I rummage through the clothing racks, occassionally pulling out a tiny little outfit and wondering if it's REALLY a dress or actually just a long top.  And why do they consider a size 6 to be a Large?

But I'm cool.  I'm a cool mom.  So I'm trying to look interested, as if I were considering buying the clothes, like I would actually wear a Billabong tube dress.

And then I catch myself.   I'm singing to the music.  Out Loud.  To a song I remember rollar skating to as a young teen.  Back in the 70's!  And I know all the words!  To a song from the 70's!  And I've been moving to the beat, bouncing on my knees and swinging my hips!  In public!

I catch the eye of a smirking young a sales clerk, and I quickly turn away.

Damn!  There goes my cool mom image.  But as I turn from the clothes rack and pretend to be interested in the skateboards, I can hear someone else.

"Yeah yeah yeah yaaaaaa-ah!"

Someone else is singing!  I peek around the corner, and there's another mother, about my age, rocking out to the music.  She catches my look and smiles.

"Great song, right?" she asks.

"Sure is!"  I reply.  And she's right.  It IS a great song.  I mean, they're playing it at a West 49 store.  Therefore, it MUST be a hip song.  A cool song.  And I know all the words to it!  So...by extension...I must be cool too!  Right?

I'll let you judge for yourselves.  Here's Grand Funk Railroad's hit single from 1975, Some Kind of Wonderful.  Try to resist singing along or moving to the beat.  I dare you.

  4. really fun post -- i even listened to the song all the way through! personally, i was a cooler mom than teenager, because my teenage kids introduced me to "retro" music from my own youth that i was not allowed to listen to at that time -- haha!!

  9. Damn, yeah! I'd totally rock out to that song -- and I did! What's hysterical is these kids think it's something new that they've discovered so of course you look like a cool mom. I bet no one will be singing Justin Bieber songs thirty years from now.

    Rock it, girlfriend!

  13. Hey Judy! Remember walking down the streets after roller skating and singing at the top of our lungs "Lay down and boogie and play that funky music 'til you die!" hahahaha! We thought we were cool then, too!

  15. I have to admit, I'm kind of partial to Justin - just because he's a local boy.

  16. I'm "uber cool!"? I always suspected as much. Just don't ask my kids though - they may have another opinion!
