My Dirty Little Secret

I have a confession to make - something truly horrific and shameful.  It's not easy to talk about this.  In fact, I'm quite embarrassed to be sharing it with you, but I've finally come to realize that I desperately need some help.    So....please give me a moment to gather my courage.

Okay.  Here is it ... (deep breath)

My dog eats poop.

Yup!  This dog.

Behind this Brittany Spaniel's sweet temperment and loving disposition lies a dirty little secret.  His name is Bojangles and he is a poop-eater.  There.  I've divulged my shameful secret.  My dog eats poop.  I'm feeling a little better now.  Admitting I have a problem is the first step, right?

But what is the second step?  I've tried holding an intervention (actually MANY interventions) where I've stood at the backdoor and yelled  "No!  Bojangles!  Leave it!  Don't you dare...!  Nooooooooooooooooooo!"  but nothing I've said will break him of this addiction and I've had to turn away, unable to watch.

His ordure of choice are poopsicles - those tempting frozen nuggets that make their appearance at this time of year when the snow begins to melt away.   Without a single thaw this winter, we've been unable to scoop the poop since December, so the pickings are plentiful.  He's like a booze hound at a free shooters bar!

Now, I'm sure some of you may think the easy solution would be to clean up the yard, but anyone who's tried plucking poop out of a foot of slushy snow in the freezing rain knows just how impractical this is  - it's all about the consistency.   But I just can't wait for the right weather to sun dry or freeze hard the offending feces; I need help now!  Please!  Any suggestion or solution would be greatly appreciated (I'd prefer solutions, but suggestions will be accepted as well).

  1. Hi Kara, Cliff's suggestion for the unfortunate "turd hound" (not booze hound!) is to take him to a dog trainer for help. There is someone who has a TV show about dogs. Maybe that person would have a help page.

Maybe an electrified collar that you'll have a controller for and could zap Bojangles when he tries to snatch a turd would be an option? Something like the electric fences?

    Good luck!

  2. Jeez! Surely not? Your dog eats his OWN shit? There is only one thing for it. You need to feed him mints, and lots of them. Good luck me dear!

  3. Alberta & Annie: Well....I MAY have over-exaggerated just a tad. But I have caught him with a few poopsicles recently. My vet tells me it's a common problem at this time of year so I don't think I'm ready to call in the Dog Whisperer. But I am going to buy him some mint-flavoured dog treats.

  4. Hahaha!!! My Dustin dog prefers cat turds, and nothing helps except to try and scoop out the turds from the cat pans as they appear. He's been on all kinds of mineral suppliments, to see if something is lacking in his diet that he needs, but secretly I think he has an uncontrollable addiction to those little tender tasty poop rolls, and I haven't been able to find a Turd Muncher Anonymous group yet to enroll him in. I do have an older post about his addiction. Good luck with Bojangles!

  5. Clipped Wings: if you ever find that Turd Muncher Anonymous group, let me know. I could use some moral support.

  6. Could be worse. You could be sticking your head in YOUR toilet bowl.
    Or mine.

  8. Roxy Ann used to eat poop when she was a puppy, but thank goodness she out grew it. I feel your shame, and am here for you if you need a shoulder to cry on.

  9. Haha! What a cute little dog! Although I'm I don't have to smell his breath! This was a really funny post Kara. PAMO linked to it from her blog and I'm glad she did.

  10. Oh dear! What a very funny post This also made me smile as we used to have a labrador that would eat poop, his and any other dog's...but he was such a character that you had to forgive him. He also ate whatever he could find in our bin, the cat's left over food, anything disgusting he could find when out walking and so on. I'm afraid I can offer no solutions...but what a great dog you have!
    Thanks for the laugh ;)

  11. As the owner of several poop eating dogs over the years, I'm sorry to tell you that I never found a way to break their habit. Interestingly, none of them ate dog poop, but any other species...yum. Good luck!

    And great photo!

  12. This is hilarious! You have a great blog.

You'd left a message on my blog (http://mariscamera.blogspot.com/2011/03/versatile-blogger-recognition.html) asking how I got my Peonies to bloom into August. They are in the sun but receive shade part of the day. I think that helps. Or, it could be our soil. :D

  13. What a great post. Remind me NOT to let Bojangels teach Riker of these yummy little treats as Riker is now on a stricked diet when he comes to your house.
